* * * *

Elliot was being sidetracked, but he didn’t argue the point. Courtney didn’t look like he wanted to talk, so he left things alone. He was still kicking his own ass for what he’d just said. No, he didn’t want to be just bed partners. Elliot wanted more just as much as Courtney, but the idea of a serious relationship was making his insides feel like ice.

He was better at showing how he felt rather than saying the words. Elliot had never been that good at expressing himself and he couldn’t think of the right thing to say. “Yeah.”

As Elliot stood in the empty parking lot, outside a small-town bar with the streetlight shining overhead, he watched Courtney get into his car and drive out of the parking lot. He felt the momentary loss, knowing that something had changed in the man. Why couldn’t things be simple when it came to matters of the heart? He couldn’t understand complications.

“Hey,” Lucy called out as she walked from the tavern. “I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the help you gave me with the potluck dinner.”

Elliot felt guilty. He hadn’t talked much to his friend lately. “And we appreciate the charity dinners you host.” He gave her a quick hug before he headed to his truck. He didn’t want to keep Courtney waiting.

As he drove, Elliot questioned himself about his feelings for Courtney. Why hadn’t he told the man the truth? Why had he said that things were fine the way they were? Elliot wanted more. But when it was time to step up to the plate, he’d failed miserably.

Pulling into the drive, he spotted Courtney standing by his car. No, he was leaning against it and his eyes were closed. Was he that tired? Whatever was going on, Elliot wanted to get to the bottom of things. He didn’t like seeing Courtney like this.

Without saying a word, Elliot scooped Courtney up into his arms and carried him to the house. The man wasn’t light. He was just inches shorter than Elliot, and slimmer, but still solidly built, and judging by his lack of protest, exhausted.

Aunt Meg came out into the dining room, watching them with a concerned look on her face, but she didn’t say a word. Elliot walked upstairs and laid Courtney in his bed. When he glanced up at Elliot with tiredness in his eyes, Elliot leaned forward and kissed his forehead. “Just get some sleep.”

Courtney was out two seconds later. Elliot undressed him and then went downstairs.

“Is everything okay?” Aunt Meg asked as she made him a cup of hot tea.

“No,” he admitted. “I’ve been a damn fool.”

Her hand stilled on the tea bag as she gave him a knowing look. Elliot hated when she looked at him like that. It made him feel like he was five years old and in trouble.

“You pushing that man away?”

“That about sums it up,” he said as he took a seat at the table. “I’m not sure why, though.
